In the English language, pilot does not refer to the driver of an automobile or motorcycle. The word pilote is, however, used for this purpose in French. From its general use, apparently, a form of the word is used in Japanese for the operator of a giant robot and gets back-translated into the scripts or subtitles of many anime shows.
