Offensive tackle
From Encyclopedia Jr, free information reference for Kids
In American football, the offensive tackle is a part of the offensive line. Designated as the left and right tackles, they are lined up on the line of scrimmage, to the outside of the guards and to the inside of any tight ends that might be in the play. Their job is to block the onrushing linebackers from sacking the quarterback or to clear a path (or "hole") for a running back.
The left tackle is the more athletic of the two and the best pass blocker. The left tackle's ability to defend the quarterback during a passing play is critical. The quarterback in most cases must rotate his stance in relation to the line of scrimmage in order to throw the ball. This effectively creates a blind spot for the quarterback from which he is especially vulnerable. The right tackle is not as athletic, and is usually the offensive line's best run blocker.
