Dogfish

From Encyclopedia Jr, free information reference for Kids

Dogfish may also refer to a member of the Bowfin family.

The name dogfish is applied to a number of small sharks found in the northeast Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean, especially those in the three families Scyliorhinidae, Dalatiidae and Squalidae. The name is applied only loosely and does not signify a close taxonomic relationship. A number of other unrelated fish, notably the bowfin, eelpout/burbot are also sometimes referred to as dogfish and commonly sold as rock salmon (or huss) as fish and chips[1].

Species of dogfish include:

  • Brown smoothhound, Rhinotriacis henlai
  • Chain dogfish, Sciliorhynus retifer
  • Leopard shark, Triakis semifasciata
  • Lesser spotted dogfish, Sciliorhynus canicula (also called the small-spotted catshark)
  • Longsnout dogfish, Deania quadrispinosa
  • Prickly dogfish, Oxynotis bruniensis
  • Roughskin dogfish, Cirrhigaleus asper
  • Shortnose velvet dogfish, Centroscymnus cryptacanthus
  • Smooth dogfish, Mustelis canis
  • Spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias
