[edit] History

It was a Portuguese colony, dependent of Daman, from 1779 until 1954 when it was absorbed by India. From 1954 to 1961, the territory was largely self-governing, the administration being done by a body called the Varishta Panchayat of Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli.[1] [2] It became a Union territory in 1961[1] and is currently represented in the Parliament of India; the Lower House (Lok Sabha) and the Upper House (Rajya Sabha)

[edit] Economy

Dadra and Nagar Haveli's gross state domestic product for 2004 is estimated at $218 million in current prices.

Manufacturing is the main economy in Dadra and Nagar Haveli as the taxes are low — no excise. The territory is run by a Lieutenant Governor. Today's Writing Products, a S&P CNX 500 conglomerate has a corporate office in this Union territory. It reported a gross income of Rs.1,215 million for 2005. [citation needed]
