Corer

From Encyclopedia Jr, free information reference for Kids

A corer is a device for taking a core sample. It may range in size from a multi-ton rig to be dropped from a ship and able to penetrate hundreds of meters into the sea floor, to instruments as small as a penny designed to sample the rock on another planet.

Corers feature a hollow tube that is used to be rotated to drill into the coring medium, hammered or pressed in, dropped from a height, or vibrated to work its way into loose material, such as sand. Drills can be rotated by motor or borers cranked by hand. Corers are designed for a specific type of application on specific materials.
