Captivity

The term captivity is used to refer to the following meanings:

  • the state of being confined to a space from which it is difficult or impossible to escape; see imprisonment.
  • the same used in a figurative sense, like for example female captivity, as allegorically portrayed in The Gilded Cage, a painting by Evelyn De Morgan.
  • of animals, not living in the wild, see captivity (animal).
  • the Babylonian captivity of Judah, as described in the Bible.
