  • Alaric I deposes Priscus Attalus as Emperor.
  • August 24 - Visigoths under Alaric I sack Rome.
  • August 27 - Visigoths' sack of Rome ends. They depart with countless valuables, including spoils of the Temple in Jerusalem brought to Rome by Titus. This marks the first time since 390 BC that Rome had been sacked.
  • Emperor Honorius tells Britain to look to its own defences, effectively ending Roman rule in Britain.

Eastern Roman Empire

  • General Constantius III, is elevated to the position of magister militum, and takes control of the Eastern Empire.
